How is it that we’ve poured billions into cancer research…
Filled every hospital with high-tech treatment centers…
And still—still—cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S.?
Here’s the dirty secret Big Pharma doesn’t want you to think about: Cancer adapts. It evolves. It learns how to survive the very drugs meant to kill it.
And now, scientists in Canada may have uncovered how.
In a breakthrough study out of the University of Ottawa, researchers discovered a hidden cellular mechanism that helps cancer cells bypass DNA damage—and keep growing anyway.
This is exactly why so many aggressive cancers come back stronger after chemo. And it’s exactly why throwing more money at drug development isn’t the answer.
Cancer’s Secret Weapon
Let’s break it down.
Most chemo drugs work by damaging cancer cells’ DNA. The idea is that if the DNA is broken, the cell can’t divide—and it dies.
But in many cancers, this backfires. Damaged cells don’t die… they adapt. They find a way around the damage. They keep dividing—mutating as they go. And that’s how drug-resistant cancers take hold.
The Ottawa team discovered that a tiny structure inside cells called the centrosome acts like a control hub, telling the cell whether or not to keep dividing—even when its DNA is damaged.
When a key enzyme called PLK1 gets pulled into that hub, it gives the all-clear.
So the cell divides. Damage be damned.
Now here’s the kicker: PLK1 is active in nearly every form of cancer. And it’s what lets cancer outsmart radiation and chemotherapy.
Why You Should Care
This isn’t just lab talk. It answers the question I hear far too often from patients and families:
“Why did the treatment stop working?”
Because we’re attacking cancer the wrong way. Big Pharma keeps pushing drugs that slam the DNA… without addressing how the cell ignores the damage.
And that’s not an accident.
Because if your cancer goes away and never comes back? That’s one less lifetime customer.
What Needs to Change
This discovery opens the door to something hopeful: New therapies that stop PLK1 from giving the green light.
But don’t hold your breath for the drug companies to rush in. It’s not nearly as profitable to fix the root of the problem. They’d rather sell you another round of chemo.
So where does that leave you?
Here are three things I tell my patients:
Cancer’s greatest trick is pretending it’s invincible. But it’s not.
It just takes a smarter approach—and a lot less greed.
